President of Singapore Visits India to Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations

H.E. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, visited India from January 14 to 18, 2025, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic ties. Accompanied by his spouse, Mrs. Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, and a high-level delegation, President Tharman engaged in key discussions to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. He was warmly welcomed by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he received a ceremonial Guard of Honour and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

During the visit, President Tharman held extensive talks with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, focusing on enhancing collaboration in finance, technology, and infrastructure. The

leaders also unveiled a joint logo symbolizing 60 years of robust ties. President Tharman’s engagements reflected Singapore’s vital role in India’s ‘Act Fast’ Policy and Indo-Pacific vision, underscoring the shared commitment to regional security, maritime cooperation, and sustainable development.

The visit also highlighted the deep economic ties between India and Singapore, with bilateral trade reaching USD 35.61 billion in FY 2023-24. Singapore, India’s sixth-largest trading partner, has been pivotal in areas such as finance, technology, and manufacturing. President Tharman’s discussions further emphasized technological collaboration, including advancements in semiconductors and digital infrastructure, paving the way for strengthened global supply chain. resilience.

President Tharman concluded his visit with a trip to Odisha, reaffirming the multifaceted nature of the India-Singapore relationship. The historic visit set the stage for enhanced cooperation across sectors, fostering economic, cultural, and strategic ties between the two nations.
